PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
Humanistic Rabbis Applaud 9th Circuit Court Decision

The Association of Humanistic Rabbis applauds the courageous landmark decision of the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals declaring the Pledge of Allegiance to be unconstitutional because the phrase “one nation under God” violates the separation of church and state. Patriotism and its expression must not require a theistic perspective.

Our democracy is intended to protect minorities from coercion by majority belief.

We call upon all people of good will to join us in the effort to assure that all citizens of the United States of America, regardless of religious belief, be enabled to express their patriotism through the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance without theistic reference, but with “liberty and justice for all.”
