ABOUT SECULAR HUMANISTIC JUDAISM

Secular Humanistic Judaism is a movement in Judaism that embraces a human-centered philosophy and combines rational thinking with a celebration of Jewish culture and identity.

Secular Humanistic Judaism regards Judaism as the historic and cultural experience of the Jewish people, an ever changing, dynamic creation. Thus, Secular Humanistic Jews are free to adapt and create liturgies, celebrations and life-cycle ceremonies that affirm their beliefs and philosophy of life.

Secular Humanistic Jews…

  • Affirm that human beings possess the power and responsibility to shape their own lives independent of supernatural authority;

  • Affirm that Jewish history is a human saga, a testament to the significance of human power and human responsibility;

  • Affirm that ethics and morality should serve human needs, that Jewish identity is best preserved in a free, pluralistic environment;

  • Affirm that a Jew is a person who identifies with the history, culture, and future of the Jewish people;

  • Affirm that the freedom and dignity of the Jewish people must go hand in hand with the freedom and dignity of every human being.
